There is no sustainable business success without growth, as productivity and efficiency gains follow the law of diminishing returns. However, no growth model sustains forever. The time always comes when we need a growth strategy to take us to the next level. Leaping forward in scale requires reinvention. Reinvention is particularly hard when we have been successful, as we have to fight complacency and challenge the very success model which took us to where we are. Envisioning the full potential, developing the growth strategy to capture it, and reinventing the business model to deliver it are difficult enough. We must also sharpen our brand to make it resonate better with consumers’ « zeitgeist », the products which position us, our organizational design and processes, and even our organizational culture. Sharpening our brand requires a significant evolution which opens a new path to growth, but also uncomfortably challenges our familiars. We must be able to achieve this without dislocating the axis around which the brand moves so that we do not alienate core customers. This is when we need an outsider to the business who will help identify opportunities which our mental models conceal from our eyes, bring boldness in determining the path, challenge the organization’s « sacred cows », and can do all of these from the perspective of an extensive, diverse and successful senior leadership experience which enables to boldly innovate while enhancing timeless fundamentals.
